Village Discipleship Schools
We currently have over a dozen Village Discipleship Schools (VDS) across Bungoma County, reaching over 200 learners. The purpose of the course is to give learners a deeper understanding of God’s Word, leading to personal transformation and practical application in their lives and communities. Over 8 months, learners study topics such as marriage, children, work, baptism, the Holy Spirit, and salvation – subjects they have identified themselves as a need. Anyone is welcome to join a VDS course, regardless of their faith and background.
I am a retired teacher, and when I left the classroom many people suggested that I should serve in the church. But I didn’t know where to begin. Then, by God’s grace, I heard about VDS. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who welcomed me into this group, because through it I have gained knowledge — and truly, knowledge is power. What I’ve learned has helped me know God more deeply and has encouraged me to read the Bible with understanding. Before, I struggled with Bible knowledge, but now I can even quote verses, even if not perfectly.
As the training continues, I feel equipped to serve God. You cannot teach others if you do not know anything yourself, and VDS has become my place of learning. It is empowering me to lead and to teach. I’m also enjoying life at home in a new way because my husband is a student here too. These days, if we disagree, we find ourselves turning to the Bible. He will point me to a verse, and I find my answer there. It has brought harmony into our home.
Retirement can sometimes feel lonely, but through VDS I have made many friends. Some people even ask me when I plan to retire — they think I am still working! That tells me I am living a joyful life, and that joy has come from VDS. My relationships with others have improved as well. I no longer hold grudges, and people now come to me for advice — and they actually listen.
The knowledge I have gained through VDS has brought transformation, not only in my life but in the whole community. It is helping all of us. May God bless IcFEM.
