A successful free surgical screening event was held at DMH over 12th–14th May. 146 patients were screened, 84 patients were booked for surgery, and so far 70 surgeries have already been successfully completed, with more procedures to take place in the next few weeks.

We praise God for the positive impact this initiative is making in the lives of many within the community. Someone who has already benefitted is Rael.

Rael had long dismissed her morning hoarseness as something minor, even as her voice weakened and swallowing became painful. Over time the symptoms worsened, until a bout of heavy coughing left her with sharp throat pain and the alarming discovery of a swelling in her neck. At her local hospital, tests revealed she had a goitre—an enlarged thyroid gland pressing against her throat and affecting her voice—requiring surgery.

Financial constraints made treatment impossible at first, leaving Rael forced to live with growing discomfort. Then, unexpectedly, she came across a post on DMH’s Facebook page announcing a free medical camp offering specialised treatment. She registered immediately and was selected for surgery. The operation was successful, and Rael now looks forward to life without constant soreness, difficulty breathing, or the fear of losing her voice. “I encourage others not to ignore unusual symptoms and to seek medical attention early. I also hope my journey reminds people that hope can appear unexpectedly—even through a simple social media post that changes a life forever,” she shared.
