Esther Akiru gave birth to her twins prematurely at 34 weeks. The babies were underweight, fragile and struggling to breathe, and they were immediately rushed to the Special Baby Unit at DMH where the medical team leapt into action.

The first few days were critical, with each baby being supported with oxygen on CPAP.  Gradually, they began to gain weight, were weaned off oxygen therapy and started to respond more actively to their mother’s touch. After two months in the Unit, the babies were finally ready to be discharged.  “These babies are alive because of the care they received at Dreamland – I am forever grateful,” she said.
